When in 1977-78 I was appointed as State Secretary of “The Punjab State Sri guru Ravidas 600th Birth Anniversary Committee, Chandigarh”. I started researching about the origin of my sub caste.
Though the God has made no castes, he only created two categories: man and woman but the caste system was created by social persons to divide and rule the people.
Later on I again joined the Punjab Legislative Assembly, Chandigarh as Superintendent. To search the origin of my sub-caste I contacted ‘Gurbachan Singh Khokhar’ my friend, in “the Department of Archives of Punjab and took his help in this regard.
There are so many sub-castes under the heading of Saroya or Saroye or Saroa or Sarao. During my search, I found that these sub- castes Saroya or Saroye or Saroa are in Sangrur and Bathinda district. Saroya sub caste is also available in Kapurthala district. I also read in the record of the Archives Department in Patiala, that Saroya caste is also available in U.P., Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.
I also understood that some of Saroya community had changed the name of their gotras such as Bhatia sub-caste has changed their gotra Bhatoa, Bhutti and Bhatma etc.
Where ever I went and met the people I found/felt that they are very helpful and co-operative ones.
According to the names of my family members the last name differs i.e. Chand, Raj and Lal. It may create little bit confusion in the minds of the people of foreign countries. So I am of the view that the last name should be “Saroya”, as our Gotra. (Sub Caste).
